A Song of Ascents. Of David.
Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!
It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes!
It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion!
For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.
What do you want? What do you work for? What do you pursue? Where does your time go? What is the benefit from what you do?
- Life Forevermore?
We all have seen movies or read books or heard stories where someone was pursuing immortality. To get immortality they had to fight, sacrifice, lose part of themselves, hurt people they loved… And the immortality was not what they had thought. It wasn’t worth it.
Here, David tells us how to get Life Forevermore. It doesn’t involve hurting others. It’s not ‘dog eat dog’. It’s Unity. It’s brotherly love. It’s a pleasant thing to do, and there, the LORD has commanded His blessing.
God himself is a Unity. We call Him the Trinity. The Hebrew Scriptures say: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” Deuteronomy 6:4
The ‘one’ there is not the cardinal number one, but has a meaning of making something one. The same word ‘echad’ is used when husband and wife come together and are ‘one’.
God is a unity, and he wants believers to be a unity.
“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me.I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.” John 17:20-26
God values unity. Christ prayed for our unity. The blessing, Life Forevermore meets us at the point of unity.
So what do we really want? What should we really pursue? And how should our actions change if we are pursuing unity? This pursuit of immortality will look completely different from any other we’ve seen. It’s not ‘dog eat dog’, it’s that I should be a blessing to you, an encouragement, sharing your burdens and sharing my heart with you.
Let’s put aside the ugly ‘striving’ after the pleasures of this world, and instead strive for Life Forevermore.
